DFS and Rohde & Schwarz successfully complete nationwide radio modernization program with approx. 4000 ATC radios at 100+ radio sites.

Rohde & Schwarz today announced the successful completion of the Radio Site Upgrade and Modernization (RASUM 8,33) program with the German Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH. RASUM 8,33 entails radio modernization, Germany-wide with approx. 4000 radios at more than 100 radio sites, connected to the four large area control centers (ACC) and 15 international airports operated by DFS.

The field-proven Rohde & Schwarz air traffic control (ATC) turnkey solution of CERTIUM® radios, with racks, filters and antennas, is compatible with VoIP and ED137 and enables safe and efficient airspace operations.

This large radio fleet is centrally managed and monitored by a country-wide Control & Monitoring System, based on the R&S®RCMSII solution. Status information of radio systems and operationally needed adjustments can be handled by technical staff of DFS in a very efficient manner. This subsequently results in an outstanding system availability and optimized cost of operation.

“Having a partner like Rohde & Schwarz by our side throughout the entire project duration of multiple years is of greatimportance, as the company is very reliable. The technology features low failures and downtimes, their experts show the utmost technical understanding and the company overall has an extraordinary depth of development, production and roll-out capability of turnkey systems,” Verena Becker, DFS Project Manager RASUM 8,33, explains. “The communication with the trusting and supportive team, was always constructive and goal-oriented and made it a pleasure working with Rohde & Schwarz all the way from system design to implementation and commissioning.”

“Together, as a joint team, we mastered the high technical and operational requirements of the German airspace as well as the necessary preparation and implementation for 8,33 kHz channel spacing and future-proof VoIP connection”, Marius Münstermann, Vice President ATC at Rohde & Schwarz concludes. “As a technology leader with state-of-the-art turnkey solutions, the CERTIUM® portfolio of Rohde & Schwarz features long service life, sustainability and high system availability & low probability of failure. Already, we are in final discussions with DFS for a subsequent service level agreement to support nation-wide radio system for years to come. This is another example of collaboration in our decade-long and trusted partnership with DFS.”

DFS will host the global ANSP community at CANSO AGM in Berlin from 7 to 9 June 2023 and Rohde & Schwarz is going to showcase its technology capabilities “made in Germany.”
