A-CDM fully operational at Milan Linate

Italy’s ENAV in collaboration with airport operator SEA has completed the integration of systems needed to make Milan Linate a fully operational A-CDM (Airport Collaborative Decision Making) airport.

The A-CDM is an integrated platform that broadcasts in real time flight status information of all flights to the Network Manager Operations Centre at EUROCONTROL .

EUROCONTROL distributes this information to other connected airports , optimizing the flow of air traffic and the management of airport capacity, increasing flight punctuality , reducing fuel consumption and the resulting environmental impact.

Milan Linate airport became the 20th fully implemented A-CDM airport – a community which represents 28% of departure traffic in the Network Manager area. By the end of 2016, EUROCONTROL, as Network Manager, expects to have integrated three more airports, representing a total of 32% of departure traffic, with further airports bringing the number to 47% by the end of 2017.

Milan Linate is the fourth Italian CDM airport, joining Rome Fiumicino, Milan Malpensa and Venice Marco Polo. Naples will be the next, in mid-2017.

“The strong presence of general and business aviation at Linate, which is quite challenging in terms of predictability, has required additional effort in the tuning of the system and operational procedures,” said EUROCONTROL.

A-CDM integrates processes and systems aiming at improving the overall efficiency of operations at airports, by using the landing time estimations provided by Network Manager and then focusing on the aircraft turn-round and pre-departure sequencing processes. This in turn allows the ATM Network to run more fluently.

The benefits are also visible at a network level, with more accurate take-off information feeding into the air traffic flow and capacity management system run by the Network Manager. As a result, the network’s capacity is used more efficiently. In particular, a more effective use of slots results in reduced delays, improved predictability of a flight’s trajectory and optimised use of resources at airports. A recent study found that A-CDM airports are more operationally resilient cost-efficient with tactical delay reductions leading to cost savings of close to €1 million in 2015.
