Finmeccanica-Selex signs €206m 4-Flight deal

ENAV, the Italian air navigation service provider, has awarded a consortium led by Italy’s Finmeccanica – Selex a €205.9 million contract to develop the 4-Flight air traffic control system.

Finmeccanica – Selex ES, will act as the lead partner of a EEIG (European Economic Interest Grouping) formed together with Vitrociset and other partners.

The 4-Flight programme will develop a new replacement system within nine years to manage the 751,728 sq km of Italian airspace in two phases: a first four-year phase, during which new system capabilities will be deployed in the Italian air traffic support facilities and a second one that will further enhance the system with additional functionalities compliant with operational needs, new regulations and requirements set down by the European programme SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research).

SESAR will involve all the industry stakeholders to develop a European solution delivering the best safety and efficiency over the next 30 years.

The 4-Flight solution will integrate state-of-the-art software in approximately 1,000 high-end computers connected through a nationwide high-speed communication network to increase overall operational capability and deliver improved safety, punctuality and environmental efficiency to more than 1.8m flights.

Finmeccanica – Selex is a major international player in large scale and complex Air Traffic Management systems projects in more than 150 countries and is one of the main industrial contributors to the development phase of the European SESAR initiative.
