Caught on Camera: Near miss, go around at Barcelona El Prat

This is making it’s way around the web today.

This apparent near miss at Barcelona El Prat Airport was captured on video by Miguel Angel Ramirez Ruiz on the morning of July 5.

An Aerolineas Argentinas Airbus A340-300, flying from Barcelona to Buenos Aires, seems to cross the runway in the path of a Boeing 767-300, just about to land on arrival from Moscow Domodedovo.

Ruiz writes: “The Utair 767 was about to land on Runway 02 while the Argentinas Airbus A340 was crossing the runway.

“By the time Russian pilots sights Argentinas (they were taxiing to holding point RW25R for take-off) on the runway while they were on final approach, they do their best making an impressive and close go around.”

The Boeing aircraft positioned for another approach and landed safely about 15 minutes later, whereas the Airbus departed for Argentina about 20 minutes after the incident.

The runway in question is understood to be normally inactive, and it is common for aircraft to taxi across it without stopping.

Spanish ANSP Aena stated that the Boeing could have continued the landing without any danger, that the separation between the two aircraft was sufficient, and that the Airbus aircraft would have cleared its path. Even so, Aena said an investigation has now been opened into the incident.
